Education in Gambia
Gambia does not have compulsory education. There is primary, secondary and higher education. Three-quarters of the children attend at least some years and boys are prioritized. Most children start school around five years of age. Many children in the countryside do not finish their school or continue their schooling.
The contribution made by children to the farm work and housekeeping is often a necessity. The primary education is free of charge. However, parents are asked to contribute to the school fund and uniform. The uniform is mandatory and constitutes the equality of the children. Parents also have to pay for books, notebooks, pens, etc. A nursery school, however, is a private school where salaries have to be paid by the school itself.
